I don't think there is a 'best' time; that partially depends on your preferences. Any time of year the house will be beautiful. You might enjoy the all out decorating at Christmas time. But then again that will be a distraction. If you are really into gardens and plants you might prefer spring and early summer. Although I feel the Japanese garden will be delightful any time of year. If I lived close enough I would want to experience all the seasons.

Tickets to many events are now pre-sale only, but for daily tours (which resume on April 1, 2023) you may purchase tickets upon arrival, if there is availability.
