Despite ongoing cleanup and restoration efforts following the Palisades Fire, a portion of the Pacific Coast Highway reopened Sunday to traffic.

Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Palisades neighborhood are reopening to the public this weekend despite concerns from some local residents and officials who fear it’s too soon to allow wide access to the fire-damaged area.

More rain could finally end Southern California's fire season as Pacific Coast Highway reopens for the first time in weeks.

The Pacific Coast Highway will be partially reopened this Sunday morning for the first time since the Palisades Fire. Beginning Feb. 2 at 8 a.m., essential traffic can use one lane in each direction. While the Los Angeles Police Department will not hand out re-entry passes, National Guard troops will remain in many areas.

With cleanup and restoration work still ongoing in the wake of the Palisades fire, all areas of Pacific Coast Highway will nonetheless reopen to essential traffic beginning Sunday, though with only one lane open in each direction — and with reduced speeds in effect, it was announced Friday.

The planned reopening of Pacific Coast Highway in the Palisades Fire burn zone has been postponed, and checkpoints in the area will remain in place.

After Pacific Palisades residents expressed concerns that their neighborhoods will be open to the public, Mayor Karen Bass on Saturday announced that law enforcement checkpoints will remain in place.
