Guyana, [b] officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, [12] is a country on the northern coast of South America, part of the historic mainland British West Indies. Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and is also the country's largest city.

Guyana has a narrow Atlantic coastal plain that extends up to 10 mi (16 km) inland and includes reclaimed land protected by seawalls and canals. Inland, a high rainforest covers three-fourths of the country. The Acaraí Mountains in the south provide headwaters for the Essequibo River.
