Macrofungi refers to all fungi that produce visible fruiting bodies. These fungi are evolutionarily and ecologically very divergent. Evolutionarily, they belong to two main phyla, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, and many of them have relatives that cannot form visible fruiting bodies.

Macrofungi are well known as mushrooms, which belong mostly to Basidiomycota with a few from Ascomycota, and up to now, around 40,000 species have been described. In people’s lives, macrofungi are closely related to our economic activities, especially for food and medicine.

Macrofungi are distinguished by having spore-bearing structures visible to the naked eye (mushrooms, brackets, puffballs, false-truffles, cup fungi, etc.). Most macrofungi are Ascomycota or Basidiomycota, but a few are Zygomycota. Most terrestrial macrofungi are saprobes or mycorrhizal symbionts, but some are patho gens of plants or fungi.
