Spicules: Meaning, Classification and Development
The spicules or sclerites are definite bodies, having a crystalline appearance and consisting in general of simple spines or of spines radiating from a point. They have an axis of organic material around which is deposited the inorganic substance, either calcium carbonate or hydrated silica.
Spicule Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster
Along the solar horizon, towering spires of gas known as spicules stretch up to about 6,214 miles (10,000 kilometers) from the Sun’s chromosphere. — George Dvorsky / Gizmodo, Quartz , 2 May 2024 According to a press release, the team observed the emergence of spicules while also monitoring nearby magnetic fields.

Sponge spicule - Wikipedia
Spicules are structural elements found in most sponges. The meshing of many spicules serves as the sponge's skeleton and thus it provides structural support and potentially defense against predators. [1] Sponge spicules are made of calcium carbonate or silica.
Sponge - Skeletal Structure, Porifera, Spicules | Britannica
2025年1月13日 · The mineral skeleton is formed for the most part by units called spicules, either scattered throughout the sponge or united to form fibres; spicules are classified as megascleres, which function in support, and microscleres, which function in protection and also aid in support.

2024年5月21日 · In biology, spicules are used by many invertebrate animals to support themselves and strengthen their skeletal structure. They are composed of a variety of materials, depending on the organization making the spicule, and they can be found in a variety of locations.
Sponge spicules as blueprints for the biofabrication of ...
Spicules comprise a high refractive index core, a surrounding low-refractive-index cylindrical tube, and an outer portion with a progressively increasing refractive index. These optical characteristics of spicules are complemented by surprising mechanical properties based on the composite structure, lamellar architecture, and presence of dopants.
